![]() ![]() As with all Spitfire libraries, you can adjust the balance of the different mic sets (three sets in this case) which were used for the session, and you can also turn off the various articulations that you aren’t using in order to save memory. Each instrument has between thirteen to sixteen articulations, and these can be selected with keyswitches at the bottom of the MIDI range. There are six instruments sampled here – three different solo violins, a viola, a cello, and a double bass.Īll are played by top rank professional players with gorgeous tones. For now, let’s concentrate on the basics of the sample set. Some more about what I did with these samples in a little while. (For those who want to “go under the hood” and have a look at microtuning in Kontakt, I just wrote an article about that, and have posted it on my website: ) (Scales with 25 notes and scales with five notes both worked very well with these samples – there was never an instance where the timbre or the “atmos” of the samples was in the least distorted.) Thanks to Spitfire for leaving these samples unlocked – I gave this set a microtuning torture test, and the instruments never sounded less than gorgeous under the most extreme microtunings. ![]() Furthermore, I was playing these samples in various extreme microtonal scales, and because of the way Kontakt does microtonality, there was no warping of the timbre or the atmos of the string samples, only the slight detuning of pitch that each sample required. This is all very subjective, I realize, but I really felt that these samples adapted themselves beautifully to the requirements of each different mood I was trying to establish, where other sample sets at times didn’t. I think this was because these samples are recorded very cleanly, and the players are playing pretty neutrally, so that the samples then adapt to the emotional implications of the note and rhythm choices, and don’t impose a kind of musical hidden agenda onto the music. As a test, I wrote a series of four small pieces using them – each one having a different emotional feel and a different “orchestrational” world – and the string samples adapted beautifully to the desired emotional world of the piece. It was a considerable delight to me then, when trying out the new Spitfire Solo Strings library (requires Kontakt, either Player or Full), that I found that the instruments could be used in a wide variety of circumstances, still sound “realistic,” (that old chestnut again), but also have a wide variety of emotional and contextual “feels” to them. I don’t write epic film scores, nor am I interested in them, so if I’m using a sample library, and I want a very “still, small voice” in my score, and the overall timbre of the set implies epic sounds, then no matter how beautifully recoded, that sample set is not going to be of much use to me. But some of the ones I have played with, while gorgeously recorded, seemed a bit too much aimed at the “epic film score market” for my tastes. I love Spitfire’s sample libraries – at least the ones I’ve had a chance to play. There are just too many uses for one library to come even close.Presenting a string library that seems like the best yet from Spitfire – versatile, beautifully recorded, and reasonably priced. More classical sound, VSL solo strings the originals. If you want that record sound or at least blend some pretty close sounding solo strings with the orchestra then Abby Road two, ect. If you want that film sound then Tina Guo's library would do. ![]() If you want something that sounds up close and personal then others would do. I even still use EWQSLO for adding that extra layer of expression, pitch variation ect. If you're just looking for solo chairs to augment and orchestra then plenty will do. Because more than any other instrument solo strings are the most versatile ![]() Trying to find a good solo strings but one really needs to know what you're looking to do. I'm going through some of the same thing. Kind of solo ambient or first chair type sound. I've heard some solo stuff done with the BBCSO solo strings and it actually sounded quite good but definitely not your upfront solo strings work. The programming is not so stellar so you have to kind of of hit it in the pocket where it shines best. I actually find that working within the limits of the Hollywood Solo strings they actually sound quite good. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sort Lines no longer includes the newline at EOF when nothing is selected.Rendering: Fixed text annotation underlines not drawing when combined with other font styles.Rendering: Fixed various issues with faded labels in the sidebar.Rendering: Improved performance in files with large diffs.Rendering: Fixed region rendering edge case.Rendering: Fixed shadow related OpenGL rendering bug.Rendering: Fixed OpenGL issue related to the wrong context being active.Rendering: Improved performance with large folded regions.Syntax Highlighting: Fixed various syntax highlighting bugs related to backtracking.Syntax Highlighting: Fixed crash caused by starting a branch point at the end of a line.Syntax Highlighting: Context backtraces now link to their origin in sublime-syntax files.Find in Files: Added the "find_in_files_max_file_size" setting.Find in Files: Find-in-files now supports project-relative patterns starting with //.Find in Files: Improved binary file detection for find-in-files.Find: Patterns taken from an open file are now escaped for regex searches.Improved regex performance for syntax highlighting.Improved performance while open folders are scanned for the side-bar.Improved filesystem symbolic link detection.Reopening a file now asks for confirmation when there are unsaved changes.Added support for Nordic (Windows 865) encoding.Sub-word separators are now configurable using the "sub_word_separators" setting.Reworked comment toggling to better handle embedded languages.Added "goto_anything_exclude_gitignore" setting. ![]()
